It has been brought to my attention that fishermen on the island of Reunion use live puppies and kittens as shark bait.

The French Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) tells that these cruel fishermen attracts sharks by throwing puppies or kittens into the water, tied to fishing lines and with hooks in them. Then the fisherman simply waits for the predators to swallow the thrashing animals.

Besides being barbaric this is clearly illegal. Still the police and the court system have not yet reacted properly in these cases. According to SPA this are not isolated incidents - however only one fisherman so far has been brought to “justice” by being sentenced a fine…

I find it absolutely appalling that France, a member of the European Union, allows such barbaric and middle age treatment of animals to take place. It is imperative that the government does something to end this practice.

I hereby urge you to use your influence to ensure that France will no longer allow such horrific treatment of animals.

Sincerely,
